U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham said Monday that he intends to resign with the change in presidential government because he criticizes attempts to provide citizenship information to comply with a mandate from President Donald Trump.
Dillingham said in a statement that he would resign on Wednesday, the day Trump left the White House and elected President Joseph Biden took office.
The Census Bureau’s director’s plan to resign comes as the statistical agency is in the midst of the numbers for the 2020 census, which will be used to determine how many seats and votes the constituency gets each state, as well as the distribution of $ 1.5 trillion in federal spending each year.
Democratic lawmakers asked Dillingham to resign last week after a watchdog agency said it had set a deadline that put statisticians under pressure to illegally compile a report on the number of people in the US.
