Oakland Athletics strengthens bullpen, reaches agreement with Yusmeiro Petit, Sergio Romo

OAKLAND, Calif. – Veteran lightweight Yusmeiro Petit has agreed to a $ 2.55 million one-year contract to stay at Oakland Athletics, pending a physical, his agent said.

The agent could pay the right-handed Petit up to $ 3 million, based on incentives for games, agent Rafael Godoy said Sunday night.

“He is excited to return. It was his first choice for the first time,” Godoy told the AP via SMS. “The team has been in touch all winter.”

Oakland also signed a $ 2.25 million one-year deal with veteran judge Sergio Romo on Sunday, sources told Jeff Passan, ESPN. He also still has to pass a physical.

The two additions for the reigning AL West champions would provide a significant experience to driver Bob Melvin’s bullpen that Liam Hendriks lost in the Chicago White Sox free agency. Petit and Romo have 13 years of experience in the major leagues, and both pitchers are very familiar with the Bay who also played for the San Francisco Giants.

The 36-year-old Petit will return for a fourth season in Oakland after being 2-1 up with a 1.66 ERA over 26 outings and 21⅔ overs during the shortened 60-game 2020 season. He is versatile given his ability to take off multiple innings.

Romo, who turns 37 on March 4, was 1-2 with an ERA of 4.05 and last year for Minnesota five times and 23 strokes in 24 games and 20 overs.

A’s pitchers and catchers would report to the club’s spring training facility in Mesa, Arizona on Tuesday. The first workout is Wednesday. Oakland has been in the playoffs for the past three years – losing the 2018 AL Card Games in 2018 and ’19 in a four-game AL Division Series to rival Houston Astros last year – but has been investigating a quiet off-season.

The Athletic first reported Romo’s pending signature.
