Los Angeles County approves paid heroes for grocery workers, relief for tenants

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted on several measures to provide economic relief during the pandemic, including ‘hero pay’ for grocery workers and extended protection for tenants.

The heroic payment measure would require large grocery chains and drug dealers to provide an additional $ 5 per hour to workers in the non-enclosed areas of Los Angeles County.

The board voted 4-0 to request the drafting of the heroes payment ordinance, with final approval possibly as early as January 26th.

The measure applies to employers who are publicly traded or have at least 300 employees nationwide and more than 10 employees per store.

Although the measure applies to areas not located in the country – about 1 million inhabitants out of a provincial population of 10 million, the council asked the country’s council to investigate whether it also applies to the rest of the country can be applied.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of industries considered essential, including grocery and drug dealers,” said supervisor Hilda Solis, who co-authored the motion. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, these workers have continued to show up for work despite the dangers of being exposed to COVID-19.”

The council also offered new assistance to tenants by expanding and expanding a rent relief program and extending a moratorium on evictions.

The rent relief measure has been extended one full year until the end of 2021.

Janice Hahn, supervisor, says hundreds of thousands of residents of the province are struggling to pay their rent.

Officials say some tenants even take out loans from robbers or use credit cards to pay their landlords.

The program, which is dependent on federal funding, also increases the available assistance from $ 7,500 to $ 10,000 for eligible households, which account for up to 50% of the average median income.

The supervisors also approved a measure to extend the eviction moratorium until the end of February.

Tenants seeking help can call a provincial counselor at (833) 223-7368.
