The Gotham Film and Media Institute’s 30th annual Gotham Awards took place on Monday night and although the ceremony was virtual, the joy of the independent film world was still felt through the live event of Cipriani Wall Street in New York.
IFP CEO Jeffrey Sharp welcomed the virtual audience and the evening was attended by a handful of personal presenters including Renee Elise Goldsberry, Cristin Milioti, Hunter Schafer, Padma Lakshmi, Michael Shannon and Noma Dumezweni, as well as distance presenters such as Zachary Quinto, Lupita. Nyong’o, Anthony Mackie, Rebecca Hall and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre.
Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland received the award for best film and won the Gotham Audience Award. The best documentary was awarded to both Ramona Diaz’s Thousand cuts and Garrett Bradley’s Time. Fernanda Valadez’s Identification of functions awarded the first Gotham award for best international function.

On the acting side, Sound of Metalsee Riz Ahmed en Miss JuneteenthNicole Beharie won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively, while Kingsley Ben-Adir took home the Gotham Award as Breakthrough Actor for his turn as Malcolm X in Regina King A night in Miami …
For series, Michaela Coel is very award-winning and profound I may destroy Yoyou won for Breakthrough Series – Short Format, while winning 11 Emmy HBO comics / sci-fi series Guards won for breakthrough series – long format.
In addition Moonlight actor Andre Holland honored the late, great Chadwick Boseman with a posthumous actor tribute and Viola Davis with an actress tribute.
Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, was virtually on hand and shared emotional words: “He was blessed to lead many lives in his concentrated life,” she said. “He used the power to let go and let God’s love shine through.”
“Thank you for giving these gifts to Chad,” she said. “It is an honor to receive this award on my husband’s behalf.”
She held back tears and closed: ‘Chad, thank you. I love you. I am so proud of you. Keep shining your light on us. ”
Steve McQueen earned the Director’s Tribute while Ryan Murphy was honored with an Industry Tribute. The Gotham Awards also unveiled the first ensemble tribute to the cast of Aaron Sorkin’s The Chicago 7 Trial.
Golden Globe Award-winning and Emmy-nominated actor Jeffrey Wright added another trophy to his mantle with the Made in NY Award, recognizing the achievements of individuals and organizations over the course of their careers.
