Dozens arrested in clashes over security legislation on campuses

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) – Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Monday, removing 31 people from Greece’s second-largest city, protesting against a new campus security law.

Protesters occupied the principal’s building at the University of Thessaloniki in northern Greece for several hours and clashes erupted when police entered the building to remove it.

A total of 32 people who took part in the protest were each fined 300 euros ($ 365) for violating the country’s lock-in rules.

Parliament earlier this month approved legislation by the center-right government that allows police to patrol university campuses. Left-wing opposition parties called the measure undemocratic and supported continued protests against the new measures.
