Wuhan returns to normal as the rest of the world fights COVID-19

Wuhan, the Chinese industrial city where the coronavirus was first detected, has largely returned to normal as the rest of the world battles the pandemic.

Residents in the city of 11 million walked and exercised in a park last week, many of them without face shields.

According to the Associated Press, Wuhan was responsible for most of China’s 4,635 deaths, but has been free of outbreaks since the closure was lifted in April.

China has announced another 107 cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to nearly 89,000. More than two million people around the world have died from COVID-19, according to the latest statistics compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

After lengthy negotiations, China last week gave permission for the World Health Organization to send a team of international experts to investigate the origins of the virus. A group of experts linked to the WHO have criticized China for not moving fast enough to deal with the pandemic.
