Wounded officer at Tennessee school not shot by student’s gun

A Knoxville police officer is not believed to have been injured in a shooting at a high school where a student was killed this week, investigators said Wednesday.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said there was a fight and the student’s gun was fired before police fired twice.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the bullet that hit the KPD officer was not fired from the student’s pistol,” the TBI said in an updated statement.

It differs from an initial TBI account which states that officers responded to the toilet at Austin-East Magnet High School on a report from an armed person inside, and that the student ‘allegedly fired shots and’ hit an officer.

The student who was killed was identified Wednesday as Anthony J. Thompson, jr. 17. Knoxville police said the officer was shot in the leg.

The TBI said investigations were finding facts that could clear up the initial reports, and said they had updated its information on the events.

Wednesday’s statement does not say who shot the officer, or who shot one officer twice, or who shot more than one officer. The TBI said Monday after the incident that officers entered the toilet and one officer fired.

A spokesman for the agency said that because the shooting was being actively investigated, Wednesday’s statement was the extent of the information it could disclose at the moment.
