Wisconsin dismisses Jonathan Tsipis, the woman’s basketball coach, after the first round of the Big Ten tournament

MADISON, Wis. Wisconsin fired Jonathan Tsipis, the woman’s basketball coach, after a first round in the Big Ten tournament.

Tsipis scored 50-99 in five seasons, including a score of 16-74 in the Big Ten competition. The Badgers passed 5-19 this season and 2-18 in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez announced the coaching change Tuesday night. The Badgers lost 67-42 to Illinois in the Big Ten tournament earlier in the day.

“I appreciate Coach Tsipis’ efforts during his five years with us, but we feel it’s time for a new direction for our women’s basketball program,” Alvarez said in a statement. “I wish Jonathan the best as he moves forward.”

Tsipis arrived in Wisconsin after being 92-38 in four seasons at George Washington and earning NCAA Tournament spots in 2015 and 2016, but he could not translate the success to the Big Ten. Wisconsin has never won more than four conference games in one of Tsipis’ five seasons.

Wisconsin has not produced a winning season since 2010-11 and has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2010.
