Why double masking may be the new normal, says the doctor in Houston

This is a new protocol with a life-saving purpose.

According to the new data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, double masking is the new normal for the next pandemic. In light of the emergence of the new COVID-19 variants, this extra layer of protection can help prevent dramatic ones, said dr. Linda Yancey of Memorial Hermann told Chron.

“By asking people to double, it doubles the protection you get,” Yancey said. “It will be much more effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19. If you are already walking around in an N95 mask, you will probably not get much extra benefit.”

Researchers have discovered that adding a cloth mask over a medical procedure could potentially cause up to 96.4 percent of the contaminant particles to escape by ensuring a tighter fit and eliminating leaks, the CDC said. According to the CDC, the use of double masking significantly reduces respiratory droplets and aerosols of those infected with COVID-19.

“We continue to recommend that masks should have two or more layers, completely cover your nose and mouth and fit snugly against your nose and the sides of your face,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC director, said in an information session of the White House.

The CDC has outlined five helpful tips to make masks more protective.

  • Nasal bridge wires provide a tight seal.

  • Mask struts can improve the filter by up to 90 percent.
  • The CDC’s ‘knot-and-candy’ technique also reduces air leaks.
  • Wearing a cloth mask over a surgical machine can block the cough particles.
  • If in doubt, check for gaps through your hands to cup the sides as you inhale and exhale.

Doubling your masks can protect you from the threat of more contagious COVID-19 variants, Yancey stressed. She also confirms the need for people to stay home safely during the Houston winter storm that is expected this weekend.

“Right now we’re in a race between the virus, its variants and the vaccine that protects people,” Yancey said. ‘This weekend when it’s going to be miserably cold in Houston, this is not the time to go to a friend’s house. Shelter with the people in your family. ‘
