Valheim, the breakthrough viking survival game from Swedish developer Iron Gate, has now sold more than 2 million copies in less than two weeks of early release.

Valheim unleashes 1-10 players in a lush lo-fi, procedurally generated purgatory of dense forests, sparkling oceans and snow-capped mountain peaks, reaching them to an ultimate goal from Asgard. Before that, however, there is a lot of collaborative exploration, crafting, building and struggling to do, as players gradually gather the tools to defeat powerful ancient animals (and build pleasantly homely huts along the way).

Iron Gate launched Valheim in Steam early on February 2, and its popularity quickly skyrocketed. It celebrated a peak of 160,000 concurrent players within the first week of release, and has more than doubled in the days since then, and currently has more than 367,000 draws.

These numbers have, if you ask yourself, prompted them to stick with such perennial steam favorites as Team Fortress 2, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Ark: Survival Evolved, with just like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike being unhindered on the tie rankings .

It also makes Valheim the latest in a growing list of indie multiplayer titles that have achieved sudden, huge success over the past year, joining Fall Guys (which broke through the 2m sales mark in the first week on Steam) and Among Us, which peaked at 1.5 million players last year – with a subsequent success following a relatively muted launch in 2018.

“Everyone at Iron Gate appreciated all the messages, love, questions and thoughts from everyone, so please keep it up!” Valheim’s developer wrote in his announcement of 2 million players on Steam. “We’re so excited to work with you all to reach out to Asgard, and we’ll be telling you more about what’s next.

Valheim is expected to stay in early access development for at least a year – where he will receive the new biomes, enemies, bosses and weapons.
