University textbook encourages staff to adopt gender-neutral language and calls fathers the ‘parent who does not give birth’

Staff at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia, have been encouraged to drop the terms “mother” and “father” in hopes of being more gender-inclusive.

ANU’s gender-inclusive textbook called for fathers to be referred to as the “non-expectant parent”, and the term “mother” to be replaced with “pregnant parent” when discussing birth.

‘While many students will identify themselves as’ mothers’ or’ fathers’, those who do not identify with gender binaries include using these terms alone to describe parenting.

The textbook also recommends that you use the terms “breastfeeding” and “breast milk” instead of “breastfeeding” and “breast milk” to describe lactation.

It cites a 2019 study by researcher Lauren Dinour, who said that “heterosexual and female-focused lactation language … transmasculine parents and non-heteronormative families can fail, isolate, and harm.”

‘This language without gender is especially important to recognize in clinical or abstract academic discussions of birth and parenthood [sic] the identity of students in the classroom, and to model inclusive behavior [sic] for students entering the clinical practice, “the textbook added.

An ANU spokesman told news.com.au that the recommendations were not an official university policy.

“This is a guide produced by a research institute that examines among its many focus areas how to improve gender equality and inclusivity in our society,” the spokesman said in a statement. “This document is not an official ANU policy, process or official prescription for staff and students.”
