UK may move some coronavirus patients to hotels as hospitals struggle with new strain

England’s healthcare system could move patients to hotels to ease pressure on hospitals struggling to cope with rising admissions to COVID-19.

Health Minister Matt Hancock said Wednesday that the National Health Service is investigating various ways to reduce tensions in hospitals, including moving patients to hotels, where appropriate. The Guardian newspaper reported for the first time on discussions on the issue.

“We will only do this if it is clinically the right thing for someone,” Hancock told Sky News. “In some cases, people need care, they don’t actually have to be in a hospital bed.”

Britain already has the deadliest European outbreak in Europe, with more than 83,000 deaths, and the number of hospital beds filled by COVID-19 patients continues to increase. Hospitals in England now treat 55% more COVID-19 cases than during the first peak of the April pandemic.
