Turn? The Tesla website hid normal steering wheel option for a bizarre yoke

Tesla’s latest model announcements may have had a side of clickbait.

When the updated Model S and X were announced last week, their outstanding feature was a steering wheel that was deprived in the yoke style. The unusual design was previously displayed on several Tesla prototypes, but never used in a production model. Needless to say, this is a lot of attention in the car press.

Tesla’s website reads: “The ultimate focus on driving: no straws, no clutch. Model S is the best car to drive, and the best car is driven.”

Elon Musk elaborated that the cars can “guess” in which direction you want to go, and that the transmission selector has been moved to the central touchscreen when you absolutely need it. The vehicles are also offered with Tesla’s optional full self-driving capability, which currently offers some active driving assistance, but according to Musk will eventually be fully autonomous.

The ‘wheel’ has aroused interest from the National Road Safety Administration, which has said it wants to issue Tesla for more information.

However, it may not be the only one available. By modifying the source code of an image of the inside of the Tesla consumer website, car shop The Drive discovers that an alternative one has been hidden on the website depicting it with a traditional round wheel.

It still has no stems, and the buttons on the spokes, which apparently control the flashing lights, horn and lights, look the same as those on the yoke.

Following the announcement of its discovery, the image was completely removed by Tesla, who did not comment on its unveiling. There is currently no mention of a steering wheel on the talk page, advertising that the first deliveries will begin in March, although Musk said production is already underway and that shipments will begin in February.
