Scott, whose committee plans to remain neutral in the primary election where current Republican senators are not running, added: “Well, I told him, you know, so I’m not getting involved in the election, and I said, ‘I think it’s in his best interest to win candidates, so it’s going to be useful if he does that after the primary. ”

While Trump did not commit himself to Scott’s proposal, the GOP senator noted that there would be ‘robust’ Senate primary elections in a number of key states, ‘so I think it’s better to wait until after the general election. . ‘

Trump and his advisers have indicated he intends to get behind Senate candidates in his form. It remains to be seen whether the candidates are at odds with the ideal choices of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who told CNN last week that his high-spending super-PAC is prepared to run in the election “only if necessary” take.

But McConnell and Trump have not spoken for months, a cold war that escalated after the Senate’s GOP leader excited the former president’s actions in the run-up to the January 6 Capitol attack, even as the Republican from Kentucky voted to acquit him at his indictment on charges of inciting an uprising.

Still, when they sat down last week, Trump’s meat with McConnell did not come up, according to Scott.

“I’m the one who made sure we did not wage a civil war,” Scott said.

McConnell and Scott have both indicated that they intend to support all Republican incumbents, including Senator Lisa Murkowski, the Republican in Alaska, who angered Trump after he voted for his conviction earlier this year. Trump has said he will not support her re-election, but Scott has told Trump he has different plans.
