The COVID-19 deaths in Iowa reported more than 4,900

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of people who have died from the new coronavirus in Iowa has shown a major change in the latest reporting from government officials since Saturday morning.

On Sunday at 10:30 a.m., the Iowa Department of Public Health said 250 additional people killed by COVID-19 were added to the state’s total. It is now 4,901 since the beginning of the pandemic. This is the largest number of deaths added in a 24-hour period, surpassing the 202 added to the total on the morning of December 8, 2020.

The state is constantly keeping track of the number of people who have died due to the virus, and counts the previous days when new data is reported to the IDPH. This can sometimes lead to large changes in the data, sometimes with a large delay of days or weeks. It was not immediately clear why the sudden jump occurred during the past 24 hours, although none of the reported deaths were during the past three calendar days.

In the past 24 hours, 645 people have been reported to have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total of the state to 319,203 people since March 2020. 282 477 people are considered recovery from the disease.

A total of 358 people have been hospitalized in Iowa due to COVID-19, showing a net decrease of 18 since Saturday morning’s report. 94 of the people are in intensive care units, a net increase of 10. 29 of the patients need a ventilator, a net decrease of two. 55 people have been admitted to Iowa hospitals in the past 24 hours, similar to the 48 new patients from the previous reporting period.

An additional 2,425 people reported the test results through public and private laboratories over the past 24 hours. The positivity rate for this group of tests was 26.6%, higher than the previous day’s 17.7%. The positivity rate calculated with this method may differ from the number on the coronavirus dashboard of the state because it uses the number of people tested, not the total number of tests, including people who have been tested repeatedly.

A total of 1,472,768 people in Iowa have been tested since the onset of the pandemic.

To date, 248,832 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Iowa. 132,466 people received only a first dose, while 58,188 received both doses required for the Moderna or Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.
