Tesla, GameStop, coherent: what to look for when the stock market opens today

Here’s what we’re looking for before Tuesday’s opening bell.

US equities futures climbed before a string of income statements and testimony by Janet Yellen in which she is expected to support higher spending on coronavirus relief.

Futures linked to the S&P 500 rose 0.7%, indicating a rally after the opening clock. Those linked to the Nasdaq-100 added 0.8%, indicating an increase in technology stocks. Read our full market cover here.

What’s up

—Janet Yellen, President-elect Joe Biden’s Choice of Treasury Secretary, will testify at 10 a.m. ET before the Senate Finance Committee, which is considering her nomination. She is expected to tell lawmakers that the U.S. is risking a longer recession unless Congress approves more aid and reaffirms its commitment to market-specific exchange rates.

Interactive Brokers, JB Hunt and Netflix will report quarterly earnings after markets close.
