Taylor Swift became the first woman to win the award for Album of the Year three times when ‘Folklore’ won the Grammy Awards in the Exhibition category on Sunday night.
Earlier in 2010, she won the award for her second album, “Fearless”, and again in 2016 for her fifth album “1989”. “Folklore” is her eighth album, which means that she has so far beaten better than .333 for the winning album of the year in her career.
The only previous triple winners in the category to have won as artists are Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.
Referring to how the album was completely quarantined without meeting any of her collaborators, Swift called out to duet partner Justin Vernon, saying, “I’m so excited to meet you one day.” Swift accepted the award along with her two primary colleagues and co-producers of ‘Folklore’, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, with whom she had previously performed a variety of songs from the album in the television version.
Swift won in the category after excluding nominations in the section for her two previous albums, “Reputation” and “Lover”.
When she triumphed with ‘Fearless’, at 20 she was the youngest artist to ever win the album of the year, although Billie Eilish picked it up at a younger age last year, when she was 18.
Although Swift enters a very rare field as one of only four artists to have won the album of the year three times, there are a number of producers and engineers / mixers who have also competed as triple winners in the category, including David Foster , Daniel Lanois, Ryan Tedder and Phil Ramone.
“Folklore” has slammed albums by Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Jhene Aiko, Black Pumas, Coldplay, Jacob Collier and her friends in Haim to pay tribute.
It was just one of two original studio albums that Swift recorded and released under quarantine conditions in 2020 with the help of producer / co-authors Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. The ‘sister’ album for ‘Folklore’, a July 2020 release, was ‘Evermore’, which appeared in December and gives her another chance at the prize next year as it falls into the 2022 fitness period Grammys.
