Police on Thursday arrested a Sri Lankan beauty queen who caused a fight over the crown.
Reigning “Mrs. World’s Caroline Jurie was arrested on charges of ” simple hurt and criminal case ” in connection with the chaos Sunday night during a competition in Colombo, the BBC reported.
Jurie, who hails from Sri Lanka, started the commotion when she jumped on stage when they saw the new “Mrs. Sri Lanka winner Pushpika De Silva reported.
She rips the crown off De Silva’s head and claims that she is actually divorced and therefore incompetent to hold the title.
“There is a rule that prevents women who are already married and divorced. Therefore, I am taking steps to let the crown go to second place,” Jurie told the crowd.
Jury rather places the crown on the runner-up, causing tears and a fraka on stage.
The Silva had to be admitted to hospital to be treated for head injuries, reports the BBC.
She later told reporters that she would take legal action because of the “unreasonable and insulting” way she was treated, the BBC reported.
Police on Thursday confirmed they had arrested Jurie and another rival in connection with the fight.
“Police have arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra over the incident on Sunday on charges of simple injury and criminal case,” police spokesperson Ajith Rohana told the BBC.
Pageant organizers once again crowned De Silva and apologized for the incident.
“We are disappointed. It was a shame how Caroline Jurie behaved on stage and the Mrs. “World organization has already started an investigation into the matter,” said the organizers of the event.
