Shooting suspect in Minnesota charged with murder because the charge describes a gruesome attack

The suspect in the Tuesday shooting at a health clinic in Minnesota in which one person was killed and four others were injured, is charged Thursday with murder. In a criminal charge outlining the gruesome attack, authorities said Gregory Ulrich, 67, also detonated two explosive devices.

Ulrich is charged with second-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder, and one counts each of the criminal use of an explosive device and carrying a handgun without a permit.

According to the criminal charge, Ulrich entered the clinic just before 11am, pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and began threatening the staff. He then allegedly entered the reception area and shot two victims before pulling inside the clinic and firing three more.

The first four victims of the shooting survived. But the last victim, who was hit by a bullet that tore through her liver and spine, later died from her injuries, the complaint reads. The victim was later identified by Allina Health as Lindsay Overbay, a 37-year-old medical assistant who has worked for Allina Health since November 2018.

“The victim was a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister,” Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes told a morning news conference. “She went to work and she did not come home because of the senseless gun violence that Gregory Ulrich inflicted.”

Ulrich is also accused of detonating two bombs in the building, one near the entrance and a second inside the clinic. Investigators found a third, unexploded ordnance near his briefcase, which consisted of black powder in a small cylinder, the complaint said.

At 10:58 a.m., Ulrich called 911 and told police he would surrender, the complaint reads. Police said they laid him with his arms outstretched in the entrance hall. When he was searched by police, he allegedly carried two loaded magazines, ammunition and two marijuana cigarettes, and a preliminary search on his phone allegedly carried a “shaky video message referring to an incident in the clinic” indicated.

“Gregory Ulrich went to the Allina Clinic knowing that he would shoot that clinic. Gregory Ulrich went to that clinic knowing that he was going to detonate bombs at the clinic. He did exactly that and cowardly injured innocent people, of which one was fatal, ‘Lutes said.

Buffalo police chief Pat Budke had earlier said he believed Ulrich had targeted the facility because he was unhappy with the care he was receiving.

According to a police report obtained by The Associated Press, Ulrich had earlier threatened to carry out a shooting at the facility. The report said Ulrich was “shooting, blowing things up and practicing different scenarios to take revenge” on people who had “tortured” him, citing problems with previous surgeries and the medication he had prescribed, the AP reported.
