San Francisco 49ers sign free agents Wayne Gallman, Arden Key

Running rugby Wayne Gallman and defensive end Arden Key both visited the 49ers on Tuesday, and on Wednesday reports appeared that both players were joining the club.

Gallman’s signing was officially announced by the club. The Giants’ fourth round in 2017 will give some veteran depth in the backfield. Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. are the only players in the rankings with a major NFL series under their belt. Gallman had 338 trucks, 1,444 yards (4.3 YPC) and nine rushing touchdowns in four seasons with New York.

The signing of Key has not yet been made official, but IFL Rapoport of NFL Media reported the Raiders’ third pick for the third round in 2018 will sign with the club after resigning from Las Vegas in mid-April.

The former two-time first-team All-SEC pick dropped his one-time top-five draft inventory throughout his final college season. He went among the draft’s top defensive players after a late Day 2 pick.

His high head as a prospect did not bear fruit for the Raiders. In three years at the club, he posted 3.0 bags and 26 quarterback hits in 37 games. The 49ers have shown willingness over the past few years to risk high agents upside down who have not had much success in the NFL. Key will have the chance to compete for a rotation spot in a place where the 49ers need a depth of quality.
