San Diego County opens childcare, farm workers’ vaccinations Saturday

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County will open vaccinations for new groups starting Saturday.

According to the province, education and child care workers, emergency service workers and those working in agriculture and food are eligible for the vaccine starting this weekend.

The announcement moves the province into phase 1B of the vaccination.

“We will open vaccinations for about half a million San Diegans,” supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Wednesday. “There will not be half a million appointments available on Saturday, Sunday or Monday or for many weeks,” Fletcher warned.

The province has decided to open the vaccine appointments after a lack of first-dose appointment by seniors, Fletcher said.

Fletcher said vaccinations would be split between agencies to help deliver shots among the newly announced groups:

  • Vaccinations for K-12 educators will be handled by the San Diego County Office of Education. Everyone eligible under this group will go to the country’s vaccination website to schedule an appointment.
  • Vaccinations for emergency workers will also be handled via the province’s website. Scripps Health will provide assistance in getting law enforcement vaccinated.
  • Vaccinations for those in the food and agriculture category will be handled through the province’s website. CAL FIRE will help vaccinate farm workers on the premises.

Fletcher added that to date, more than 783,000 vaccines have been administered in San Diego County. Of these, almost 68% of the elderly were vaccinated. About 7.3% of San Diegans are fully vaccinated.

“We get vaccines at a very impressive rate,” Fletcher said.

San Diego County received a portion of the nearly 80,000 storm-delayed vaccine doses on Tuesday night, enabling the state to reschedule all missed second doses and resume first-dose appointments.
