San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said police want to be proactive in closing highways Sunday night to cause accidents to accumulate as more ice rain is expected during Sunday afternoon and evening.

McManus held an information session on road conditions in San Antonio and said he had “no good news” to share about the predicted icy temperatures.

“(The circumstances) are already very bad,” McManus said.

While McManus said the plan to close the highway was “not definitive”, he said his discussions with city and TxDOT officials focused around the plan.

“We do not want the barometer of how safe it is there to depend on how many people start crashing,” McManus said. “We want to close roads, highways or at least sections of it before it starts.”

The police chief reinforced what other public officials said in the midst of this weather – do not drive if it is not an emergency. The department has already received more than 800 calls for traffic incidents, McManus said, and dispatchers were flooded.

The closures will begin on the North Side and continue south as the weather progresses, McManus said.

The icy temperature led to the closure of virtually every highway interchange and overpass. Conditions could get worse with more snow and even snow projected this afternoon.

Early Sunday, San Antonio police officer Travis Gossett was hospitalized in critical condition after being hit by a car while working on Highway 281 and Brook Hollow.

“I do not want to predict what the prediction is going to be, but he is not going well,” McManus said. “The end result is that we have to stay off the lanes to stay safe.”

Police believe the icy conditions, coupled with the failure to control the speed, resulted in the tragic incident.
