Four actors won the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday after being the first coloreds to win the top four categories in film scene.
The SAG Awards are a meticulous Oscar forerunner. Actors form the largest branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and SAG winners regularly attend Oscar awards.
Last year, ‘Parasite’ achieved the best picture at the Academy Awards, and all the individual SAG winners – Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, Laura Dern, Joaquin Phoenix – also won at the Oscars.
These awards went to a group of actors of color this year, who could possibly cover the scene for a historically diverse Oscar winner: Chadwick Boseman, best male actor for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”; Viola Davis, Best Actress for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”; Yuh-Jung Youn, Best Supporting Actress for “Minari”; and Daniel Kaluuya, best male supporting actor for ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’.

As noted by Yahoo Entertainment, in 2021, the show was the first time that people of color achieved the leading awards in the film at the SAG Awards since they started in 1995. The outlet revealed that Yuh-Jung Youn’s victory for best female actor in a supporting role is particularly groundbreaking for the awards, as she is the first Asian woman to take home a leading SAG award.

“I do not know how to describe my feelings,” Youn said during her speech. “I was recognized by Westerners. It is very, very honored, especially by my co-actors who choose me as a supporting actress.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was fruitful for the late Chadwick Boseman as well as Viola Davis, who was up against former SAG favorites Carey Mulligan and Frances McDormand.

“Thank you, August, for leaving a legacy for actors of color that we can enjoy for the rest of our lives,” Davis said, referring to playwright August Wilson.

It was also a big night for Netflix with its other award nominee “The Trial of the Chicago 7” bringing home the highest award. The trial of Chicago 7, written and directed by Sorkin, was released to the theater before the pandemic by Paramount Pictures, which led to its sale to Netflix. The streamer is still after his first best picture win at the Oscars.
