Police suspect robbery was killed, baby injured in SW Houston shooting

HOUSTON A robbery suspect has died and a bystander’s baby was injured after an officer shot Wednesday, Houston police said.

Officials said the shooting took place in the 7900 block of Southwest Freeway around 11:35 p.m.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers spotted a vehicle suspected of a robbery. Police said the suspect did not concede and a pursuit ensued.

Investigators said the chase was on Beltway 8 and then on the Southwest Freeway driveway. The suspect then crashed and stopped at a gas station, Jack’s Grocery, at 7931 Southwest Freeway, police said.

“People need to think about others’ lives before they do things,” said Jack Abdullah, the gas station owner.

According to officers, the suspect then got out and jumped into another vehicle, where a mother tried to put gas in her vehicle. When they approached the suspect, police said they spotted a weapon.

According to police, a 15-year-old HPD veteran officer fired several shots at the suspect and killed him.

During the incident, investigators said a 1-year-old baby was hit by gunfire while sitting in the back seat.

Police said officers tried to give the baby as well as the suspect medical treatment before EMS arrived. According to a release, the child was transported to the hospital by ambulance in a stable condition.

‘That lady and her son have to go through it. “It is very worrying, and I feel sorry for the family,” said Abdullah.

According to investigators, no officers were injured during the incident.

We work fully with the police. We stand with the community today as we express our deepest sympathy to this child and his mother. ”
