“I would prefer that we investigate more thoroughly what happened. Most of what I know from January 6 comes from personal experience or from Twitter. But at the end of the day, I think it’s obvious that the president no longer qualified to hold office, ”Meijer told CNN’s Erin Burnett.
Asked if he had made a final decision on the charge, Meijer claimed he would “wait to see the additional evidence, but that is again something we are strongly considering.”
While some GOP lawmakers have called on Trump to resign – especially sense. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania – Meijer’s public position is a notable break from the majority of Republicans in the House who are asking Democrats not to prosecute, arguing such a move would be divisive.
Instead, House House minority leader Kevin McCarthy listed in a letter to GOP colleagues four potential responses to the January 6 attack. McCarthy, referring to members’ feedback, pushed for the possibility of a motion of no confidence under House Rules, as well as a dual commission to investigate riots, according to the letter. He did not specify who would be suspended.
But Meijer said Monday that Trump’s response to the Capitol intrusion amounted to a “fraudulent failure of leadership” and although some colleagues told him they were concerned about the timing of the indictment, he had not heard anyone say. the merits do not argue.
“Right now we just have silence. It’s incredibly worrying,” he said. “I am very concerned about the violence, not only what has already happened, but it could have been much worse, but I also continue with the expectation that there will be more violence.”
