Only one carmaker could not earn any 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) annually announces vehicles that earn their earnings Top Safety Choice, of Top security picks + awards. The good news is that the total awards for 2021 are higher, and 90 vehicles were recognized compared to 64 last year. The bad news is that only one pickup makes the list, but it’s still better than Mitsubishi who did not make the cut any of its models.

To be honest, Mitsubishi only sells four models in the United States. The sub-compact Mirage is a champion for fuel kilometers, with the Outlander SUV being the backbone engine of the brand. The Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross complete Mitsubishi’s range, but IIHS gave no indication as to whether these vehicles could even win an award. If there’s good news here, it’s that Mitsubishi recently debuted a brand new Outlander that borrows heavily from the Nissan Rogue. The Rogue het a Top security picks + award for 2021, so maybe it will drop to the Outlander next year.

Pickups dominate sales of new vehicles in the U.S. market, but only the Ram 1500 Crew Cab has won an award. It receives a Top Safety Choice, but it is the only vehicle of the whole Stellantis portfolio brands to even qualify. Similarly, only two General Motors umbrella vehicles were awarded. The Cadillac XT6 has a Top security picks + and the Chevrolet Equinox receives a Top Safety Choice. Hyundai Motor Group took the lead with a total of 17 awards, while Volvo took first place with the highest honor with nine Top security picks + awards.

The IIHS awards are based on vehicle performances in numerous categories. Protection of occupants in collisions is part of the evaluation process, with available safety technology and efficiency of the headlight.
