Ohio State Sugar Bowl exercises observations that are on the field

In a normal college football season with a normal bowling situation, Bucknuts would have an army of media people on the scene in New Orleans ready to cover the Sugar Bowl. It would mean face-to-face interviews (a concept that feels almost strange at this point in 2020) and a media day that would make every member of Ohio and Clemson available for interviews.

The media coverage was also included in the coming week to watch some of both teams practice. Although it is usually only about 15 minutes, and it usually stretches and warms up a lot, it is something and more than what we get during the regular season. That’s not going to happen this year, but thanks to our friends at the Sugar Bowl, we’ll get a glimpse of the Buckeyes’ practice this week.

The media on Wednesday provided a video from the practice of the Buckeyes. Even though it’s just 2:54 and more guys getting ready to practice than to practice, we’re taking what we can get. And in 2020, when COVID-19 is the biggest concern, and which may have tested positive for the virus and therefore not available for play, 2:54 is enough time for those who look nice.

This is exactly what I did (with the help of Dave Biddle) by scanning this video (sometimes going frame by frame) to see which Scarlet and Gray players were on the field. Since this is something readers want to know, we’ve provided the full video below, as well as the list of players and coaches we’ve seen and some observations.

Players in practice:

It’s important to note that this short video may not show us all players, and just because someone is not listed does not mean he was not on the practice field.

Quick thoughts

  • Even though it’s a crazy year, it’s time to stop reading in every little Instagram post. If you do not know what I’m talking about, you’re better off.
  • Back player Justin Fields has a prop on his right thumb after injuring it in the Big Ten Championship Game. Although it was just a quick grip from the throwing of Fields, it seemed like he did not hamper at all when he held the ball, and he had no obvious problems.
  • After leaving the Big Ten Championship with an injury, he ran back Master Teague is in practice. He drafted with Fields during the stretch, which sometimes means he won the no. 1 is, but sometimes also means nothing.
