In an interview with POLITICO Playbook authors Eugene Daniels and Rachael Bade, Emmer predicted that he and Trump would talk ‘at some point’.
With broad support in the Republican Party, Trump is still big in the GOP and he has already started going into 2022 primary elections. The former president, who addressed the Conservative conference on political action this past weekend, read out the names of every Republican in the House and Senate who voted to accuse or condemn him and called for ‘getting rid of everyone’ become’.
And last week, Trump endorsed a primary opponent for Ohio GOP Representative Anthony Gonzalez, who voted to accuse him. This endorsement came despite their supporters urging him to concentrate on Democrats, and not within parties.
Emmer is one of the high-profile House Republicans who has so far been willing to break up with the former president over his support for candidates leading the GOP incumbents.
Emmer said the NRCC would not openly go under his watch in the by-elections, but would provide resources to the GOP’s positions as part of an effort to win back a majority in the House, a victory he guaranteed in next year’s midterm elections.
The Minnesota lawmaker also further broke with the president, saying he does not believe Congress has the right to object to the certification of Electoral College votes. Bucket voted to ratify the election results.
Emmer said Congress does not have the power to ‘insert itself’, saying it can only intervene if no candidate reaches 270 voters or if states send ‘alternative voters’.
‘The Constitution, it is a restrictive document. “I mean, there’s a reason why one of the amendments speaks directly to the fact that any power that is not explicitly attributed to the federal government is reserved to the states,” he said. “I want to encourage Democrats and Republicans that we should always follow this as we move forward.”
He avoided saying that votes against the declaration of the November election results last year were explicitly unconstitutional, but said others should re-evaluate.
“Everyone has the right to their opinion,” Emmer said. “I think maybe we should all rethink going forward about what the Constitution says.”
But the NRCC president has stopped saying that Trump and Republicans should stop making false allegations that Trump won the election.
“All of us are going to make sure that we restore the integrity of our election so that people will trust that their votes are counted and that the result is a fair and transparent result,” Emmer said.
Emmer added that Republicans should “celebrate” Trump’s policy going forward, saying they are bringing a bunch of new voters to Republicans. ‘Emmer specifically pointed out Trump’s policies on energy, immigration and his “America First” agenda.
“Look what his administration did,” Emmer said. “Very popular.”
A week after Democratic congressional chairman Sean Patrick Maloney told Bade and Daniels that the GOP’s attempts to label Democrats Socialists were a “Republican caricature,” Emmer argued it was a true portrayal. .
“We’re going to be very honest. If your conference is on track with this radical socialist leftist agenda … and you do not stand up to fight it, you will own it. You are going to own the whole agenda, ”said Emmer. “It’s not one or two or three or four members.” Maloney argued that this kind of criticism misrepresents the Democrats as a whole.
“There will always be one or two members of a congressional caucus who say things that do not represent the majority position,” Maloney said.
