Fresno is in the most restrictive purple level, which does not cater for indoor dining.

In early November, Newsom was spotted in the posh French laundromat in Napa for the birthday of a longtime adviser. Indoor meals were not open to the public in Napa. Newsom deserves bitter setbacks for the outing, which he later called a ‘mistake’.

“I should have gotten up and … driven back to my house … The spirit of what I preach all the time is contradicted,” he said. “I need to preach and practice, not just preach.”

Newsom said in his apology that he wanted to “own” his mistake because he was worried it would undermine the message of safety he wanted to send to residents.

“I do my best every day to model better behavior,” he said.

The outing of the French laundromat helped spark a recall effort that is gaining ground in California. Organizers of the Newsom recall effort say they have collected 1.825 million signatures. They need 1.5 million signatures by March 17, but are responsible for a fraction of the signatures that must be rejected.
