Netflix’s’ Lupine ‘Tops’ Bridgerton,’ Queen’s Gambit ‘With 70M Households – Deadline

Netflix’s Lupine intends to set a global benchmark for a French series on service with 70 million households expected to monitor the five parties during the first 28 days. It’s bigger than other recent English hit series Bridgerton (projected at 63M) and The Queen’s Gambit (62 million actual). The Omar Sy star made his Netflix debut on January 8 and is fast becoming the first French series to end up on the American top 10 list of the streamer.

It was easily launched to number 1 in France and remains in that position today. Netflix reports that it was also in first place in Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden and many other countries. Lupine is 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The untouchableShe plays the lead role as Assane Diop, who uses the world-famous gentleman and disguise master, Arsène Lupine, as inspiration. The French original by Gaumont Télévision was created by George Kay (Criminal UK, Killing Eve) in collaboration with François Uzan (Family business) and is a contemporary adaptation of the novels written by the French writer Maurice LeBlanc, who created the character in 1905. The books have been adapted into dozens of TV series and movies over the years.

Since the release of the series, the original Leblanc book has gained international interest again, and it is currently popular in many markets in France, Italy, Spain, the USA, the United Kingdom, Korea and others. Just yesterday, the French national news radio, FranceInfo, presented the program as part of its daily children’s program, FranceInfo Junior, which brought in an Arsène Lupine scholar to teach young people about the origins of the character.

Located in Paris – and using the city’s locations – Lupine‘s first five-part series, Dans L’Ombre D’Arsène (In The Shadow Of Arsène), suggests She’s Diop, who as a teenager saw how his life was revamped when his father died after being accused of a crime he did not commit. Now, Diop wants to avenge his father, and outwit everyone along the way.

Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk, Transporter 2) directs episodes 1-3 with Marcela Said (Narcos) at 4-5. The main characters are also Hervé Pierre, Nicole Garcia, Clotilde Hesme, Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Shirine Boutella and Soufiane Guerrab. Isabelle Degeorges and Nathan Franck are producers.
