A freezer leak discovered Tuesday at Jamaica Plain VA Medical Center in Boston destroyed 1,900 doses of COVID-19 vaccine Moderna.
According to the VA spokesman, a plug was loose after a contractor accidentally removed it during cleaning. The freezer was in a safe place and had an alarm system installed.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and why the monitor and alarm system did not work. The spokesman said the supplemental doses are underway, and the VA does not anticipate the disruption of our vaccination effort.
According to the Department of Public Health, the number of doses sent to the Bay State has dropped by 73% this week, with only 52,225 doses entering the Commonwealth.
The latest vaccination report from the state shows that 86,230 doses were given this week, a total of 359,919 doses. The report no longer breaks down the data according to the first and second dose.
Thursday’s report did take note of the arrival of 157,300 doses of Moderna on January 12, which were not included in last week’s report.
The rate at which vaccines are administered has fallen by 24% in the week-long period covered by Thursday’s report, January 13-19, compared to the previous week.
The two coronavirus vaccines approved so far in the country’s fight against the pandemic, from the Moderna, based on Pfizer and Cambridge, require people to receive two doses, which are recommended to be spread over three or four weeks. .
President Joe Biden outlined his plan to raise vaccines across the US, promising that ‘help is on the way’.
Vaccinations are the key to making society normal again, as it is found to provide the greatest protection against serious complications in people infected with the virus.
