NBC shuts down its sports cable channel as the bundle contracts

According to reports by the Wall Street Journal and BloombergNBC Sports Group Chairman Pete Bevacqua said in a memorandum to staff members that the NBC Sports Network’s cable channel will be discontinued at the end of this year. While it’s unclear what’s going to happen with the content it’s currently airing, things like NHL games and NASCAR racing will rather move to the US network channel, and they plan to broadcast some of the two before the channel getting dark.

It could also push content to NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock, but the focus immediately seems to be on strengthening the USA Network as an option against channels like Warner’s TNT / TBS. Peacock already wears football, and Sports Business Daily note that he recently announced plans to stream fast skating. NBCU also has the Golf Channel and the Olympic Channel, which will continue to broadcast.
