Minnesota National Guard says a joint team with Minneapolis police was targeted for shooting

Two guards were injured early Sunday morning when someone shot at a Minnesota National Guard and Minneapolis police station security team, the Minnesota National Guard said.

According to the Minnesota National Guard, the shooting happened around 4:19 a.m. when someone opened fire in a light SUV on an Operation Safety Net security team guarding the area.

One guard was injured from broken glass and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and another sustained superficial injuries.

“I am relieved to know that none of our guards were seriously injured,” Major General Shawn Manke, Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard, said in a statement.

‘This event highlights the volatility and tension in our communities at the moment. I ask for peace as we work through this difficult time, “he added.

According to a statement, the Minnesota National Guard was activated as part of Operation Safety Net, a joint venture by the Minneapolis Police Department, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the state of Minnesota and local jurisdictions to protect ‘people, freedom of speech and property during the Derek Chauvin trial as well as the aftermath of police shooting Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center. ”

The incident on Sunday comes amid an increase in shooting incidents across the country.

On April 11, 20-year-old Wright was killed by police in Brooklyn Center, Minn. The local police chief, who later resigned, said he believed the officer intended to pull her Taser, but incorrectly pulled out her gun.

A Chicago police officer shot dead 13-year-old Adam Toledo last month. The body camera footage of the shooting was released Thursday.

The defense also settled its case Thursday in the trial of Derek Chauvin, who is charged with the murder of George Floyd.

Chauvin was captured on video recordings last May and knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes. Floyd was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The Hennepin County medical examiner ruled in June 2020 that Floyd’s death was a murder.
