Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday unveiled its new 2022 EQA 250 crossover, the carmaker’s latest electric vehicle, in its plan to unleash a flood of new EVs in the near future.

The EQA and its big brother, the EQC, will compete with Tesla’s Model Y in the important and fast-growing compact crossover segment.

The pint-sized crossover startup is known as Tesla chasing to complete its first European factory that supplies as many as 500,000 vehicles a year on the continent.

Europe is one of the most important markets for electric cars, as consumers in some countries are more eager to adopt motor vehicles than American buyers, and many countries have lucrative subsidies to attract potential customers. More than half of all cars sold in Norway by 2020 were on batteries.

The EQA will hit European traders this spring, while the EQC is destined for the US this year. A Mercedes spokesman told Insider that the EQA is still being considered for the US market, although no decision has been made yet.

Both SUVs will participate in a growing range of small electric crossovers that will hit the market in the coming years from brands such as Audi, BMW, Volkswagen and Nissan.

The launch of the EQA 250 comes as old-fashioned carmakers pile up in the EV market in an effort to make their offerings more sustainable, meet the stricter emission restrictions around the world and repeat Tesla’s success.

The crossover will be just one member of a broad EQ range that Mercedes plans for years to come. The carmaker plans to launch six new EQ models by 2022 – sedans and SUVs.
