Men’s Basketball Awards Announced – Atlantic Coastal Conference

GREENSBORO, NCGeorgia Tech senior forward Moses Wright has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player. highlights the All-ACC men’s basketball team and prize winners for the 2020-21 season, as issued by the conference office on Monday morning.

The All-ACC team for 2020-21 was determined by a 75-member panel consisting of the 15 head coaches of the league and 60 members of the media.

Florida State Guard Scottie Barnes received a double nod as ACC Freshman and sixth man of the year, while Virginia Tech’s Mike Young was named ACC Coach of the Year.

Jose Tech, senior guard Jose Alvarado, earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Duke Matthew Hurt’s second Duke was named the ACC’s Most Improved.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, who came to Georgia Tech after only playing high school basketball for one year, the 6-9 Wright finished third in the New York Life ACC Tournament this week in both points (18.0) and rebounds (8.1) per game. Wright dropped the rising yellow jackets to an overall 15-8 record and a fourth-place finish in the final ACC series of 11-6. Wright shoots 54.4% from the floor while playing 35.7 minutes per game.

Wright is the second Georgia Tech player to win ACC Player of the Year and the first since Dennis Scott in 1990. Wright received 33 votes from this year’s panel, far ahead of runner-up Justin Champagnie of Pitt and Louisville’s Carlik Jones ( 13 votes) each). Wright, who holds 38th place in the league in blocks with 38, also deserves a spot on this year’s All-ACC defense team.

Barnes, Florida, helped the Seminoles to a second-place finish in the ACC, averaging 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds, and finished fifth among conference players with 4.3 per game . Barnes, who averaged 24.7 minutes per game, also ranks fourth among ACC players in their assist / turnover ratio and is sixth in steal per game.

Barnes received 53 votes for ACC Freshman of the Year. North Carolina’s Day’Ron Sharpe was second with 10. The sixth man of the year was a little closer, with Barnes getting 39 votes, followed by Sharpe with 24.

Virginia Tech’s Young received 26 votes for ACC Coach of the Year to win over Leonard Hamilton (24 votes) in Florida, and Georgia Tech’s Josh Pastner (16 votes). In his second year with the Hokies, Young led a team that finished 11th in the preseason to a No. 3 ACC tournament. This is only the second time the Hokies (15-5, 9-4 ACC) have been selected number 3 in the ACC Tournament (2007) and the first time they have received a double bee since the tournament to 15 teams expanded. in 2014. The No. 3 series is the highest Virginia Tech has ever earned in the ACC Tournament.

Young’s selection is the third time that Virginia Tech’s ACC Coach of the Year has come and the first time since 2008 (Seth Greenberg).

Alvarado leads the ACC in steals with 66 in 23 games, helping Georgia Tech lead a section of the team in this category. Duke’s Hurt leads the conference with 18.7 points, while declining 6.2 rebounds per game, after scoring 9.7 points and 3.8 rebounds last season.

Wright joins the All-ACC First Team through Jones of Louisville (17.0 ppg), Champitt of Pitt (18.4 ppg, 11.1 rpg), Duke’s Hurt and Sam Hauser of Virginia (15.8 ppg).

The All-ACC second team consists of Keve Aluma of Virginia Tech, Alvarado of Georgia Tech, Jay Huff of Virginia, MJ Walker of Florida and Aamir Simms of Clemson.

A tie in the vote led to an All-ACC Third Team of six men – RaiQuan Gray of Florida, Miami, Isaiah Wong, Quincy Guerrier of Syracuse, Prentiss Hubb of Notre Dame, Armando Bacot of North Carolina and Barnes of the FSU.

Barnes joined the ACC All-Freshman Team through DJ Steward of Duke, Sharpe of North Carolina, Jae’Lyn Withers of Louisville and Caleb Love of UNC.

Alvarado was the best voice for the All-Defensive Team and was joined by NC State’s Manny Bates, Virginia’s Huff, Jordan Goldwire of Duke and Wright of Georgia Tech.
