Mega Gyarados is a Dark and Water type Mega Raid boss. Optimal syrup counters will include powerful Electric Grass Fight Error and Fairy types, with a large variety of different counters available to help you defeat them.
Depending on your levels and counters, we would recommend 3-5 high level trainers if you do not have optimal teams.
This guide will tell you how to defeat this favorite Mega, as well as the optimal stats, moves, and CP series.
Mega Gyarados Counters
Since Shadow Pokémon is very expensive to turn on and requires specific events to remove frustration with a ChargeTM, it will NOT be listed as poachers in this article. That being said, use it if you have the shadow form of a listed syrup counter Pokémon turned on and TMed.
Let’s take a look at the top attack counters for Mega Gyarados:

Thanks to a wide range of counters and a few different types of vulnerabilities Water and Dark double typing, most trainers need to set up a strong team of counters. Many of the strong counters have had events or community days that help! Reach for those who are powerful Grass Electric Fight Fairy and Error Pokémon type. So many of these counters are incredibly useful and versatile in terms of PVE, like Machamp, Togekiss and Zekrom, and it’s a name we keep coming up with.
For more budget directions you can see the full counter list here, but Roserade, Hariyama, Torterra, Normal Genesect and Sirfetch’d all appear, keep that in mind.
How to Get Mega Gyarados
You can not catch Gyarados in its mega-developed form from the attack. The mega raid boss is always catchy in its base form and as such is the CP series for a regular Gyarados.
Gyarados can be caught with the following CP values:
- 1855 – 1937 CP does not boost again
- 2319 – 2422 CP strengthened by Rainy or Miss boost again
To get Mega Gyarados, you need 200 Mega Energy for the initial evolution, then 40 Mega Energy to develop the same Gyarados again in the future. Mega Energy can be obtained via Mega Gyarados Raids, and once you have developed Mega Gyarados, you can earn 5 Mega Energy per candy while using it as your partner. You can run any Magikarp or Gyarados to earn Mega Energy, as long as you have previously developed one to register it with your Mega Pokédex.
Gyarados Blink
Like all Mega Raid Bosses, you can catch the shiny version of Gyarados from a raid, and also in the wild, if you can find it! Gyarados have a slight gender difference in the usual and shiny sprites, with the mustaches changing color.

For optimal DPS Bite and Hydro Pump this is the right way. If you need your strongest Water type of attacker, Waterfall and Hydro Pump are preferred for DPS, and for a Dark type of attacker Bite and Crunch. Mega Gyarados nie Dragon type, but if you want to use it as a Dragon type attacker, you will need a legacy move Dragon Tail with Outrage as the Charge move.
Closure
Mega Gyarados is a Pokémon that despite its stats will be a Mega that people want in their teams, Gyarados is a favorite for fans! It has a great CP statistic, and a high attack status of 292, which makes it an excellent option Water type of attacker. It does have some major weaknesses, which it loses type that it has in its regular form means that it is much weaker for Grass species than it was before.
Mega Gyarados are not usually considered one of the best Megas, but with such a cool design, and so many trainers who have a soft spot in their heart for this big shiny red beast, does it really matter? It would be great to attack strongly Fire types, and can be a help against Psychic and Ghost types, including the Mega Mewtwo forms, when available.
