Marvel’s Avengers fixes the wrong issues

Marvel’s Avengers is a game that, in my better judgment, I love a lot. The single-player campaign contained a big, fun story, but the collaborative component of the endgame stumbled outside the gate with a lack of compelling content after the campaign, and it has never really improved since its launch. it with the Titanic-like “too big to fail” theory, but recent updates have really worried me about its future. The announcement of a major XP refinement is perhaps the most worrying sign, as the developers are still solving issues that are not really the Avengers’ biggest issue.

After spending more than 150 hours in Marvel’s Avengers, the core combat and the way it makes the character’s abilities feel like it made me come back, despite a lack of content. Whether it’s new mission types, enemy types or even places. It’s all missing. Example: six months after the launch, there are only four bosses available to fight, and it’s been the same since the launch. Only half of these, Taskmaster and Abomination, are actually supervillains.

For the many who have not yet played the online component all the time and honed their heroes, but may have considered jumping in with the next generation version or new Hawkeye story content, the time will now be another blow.

The developer team recently announced an XP rework that will make the grinding of hero levels a slower process than before.

As you sharpen your heroes on their 50 levels, you unlock the abilities that offer fun with Avengers, and to have regular access to these new powers is that they become completely obsolete. The development team recently announced an XP rework that will make the grinding of hero levels a slower process than before, making an already repetitive process even longer. As explained in a blog post, reevaluating how fast XP was born out of concern about this pace:

The current XP ‘curve’ is not a curve at all. In most RPGs, the amount of XP you need to ascend increases as you get levels in a curve, but our system is a straight line. This has led to pace issues, such as skill points being rewarded too quickly at the moment, which can be confusing and overwhelming for newer players. ”Although most RPGs I have ever played require more XP per level than the previous ones, they tend to offer a level or variety and repeatability that Avengers simply do not have. In fact, the speed with which your characters increase and acquire new superpowers was one of the more welcoming aspects of Avengers’ postal game. For an experience designed to make you play as one of the most beloved superheroes of all time, to continually acquire new abilities and mix and match them to create your own versions of these heroes, have me persistent early on let play, and I never found it overwhelming.

This decision is a bit confusing, especially when it comes to the minimal amount of content that has been added since its launch. The XP processing does not seem like such an unnecessary change if there is enough variety in the game to support it, but without it it feels like a step in the wrong direction. Sharpening more at a game that is least enjoyable to hone is not what anyone is looking for.

This is especially frustrating because I remained hopeful – on the eve of every war table stream that came up, I thought to myself, ‘maybe this is the one where the problems are addressed.’ That thought has yet to become a reality. There was no word from the Secret Lab missions meant to test characters at maximum level, and without these there is very little incentive to grind for a better loot. Months passed without a sign of a road map for their addition, and it’s just hard not to worry about this – especially when some players were able to do it oddly enough. accidentally plays a part in the Secret Lab missions in September.

Given the state of the world at the moment, there are certainly many valid reasons for delays in some of the announced content. But it’s frustrating the lack of communication with Marvel’s Avengers dedicated player base, coupled with a sudden announcement like this.

March 18 could have been a moment in which Marvel’s Avengers rewrote some bugs to bring back expired players and lure a new group of players, while Hawkeye enters the fray with his series of story missions plus the PS5 and Series X versions that arrive there. But many may now be deterred by the increasing grind that awaits them. Changing the XP curve will only apply on that date, which means players currently owning the game should have an incentive to play now if they want an easy ride to level 50, and even the developers know this.

“If you have a character that is not level 50 and want to speed up your progress, you must take this time before the update on March 18,” reads the announcement. This leaves many people caught between deciding to play the same missions in an inferior version of the game, or waiting to play a technically improved version, but much longer. What should have been an exciting start for Marvel’s Avengers could possibly be a faltering restart with a player base made up of tired veterans and astonished newcomers.

I really want to love Marvel’s Avengers. In a year I want to look back and see what the success is. For that to happen, however, there needs to be better communication with fans, and a sincere back and forth about the problems fans have with the game. Of all the complaints I saw about Marvel’s Avengers, there was no question of how surprisingly fast your heroes could compare, but almost all were about the lack of pleasure you had once you did.

Hopefully the “too big to fail” theory plays out and I will enjoy this game for years to come, but this week’s announcement feels like a helpless shift in the stream in front of a potential iceberg that dawns on March 18th.

Simon Cardy currently has the power level 150 Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow, but no reason to use it. Please sympathize with him on Twitter at @CardySimon.
