According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, a man in his thirties was shot by police after shooting his friend’s mother’s friend in an apartment on the East Side.

Police were called to the East Meadow apartments in 1200 Street of North Walters Street on Friday night.

According to McManus, the man in his thirties confronted a friend of his child’s mother and then shot him. An officer who was nearby arrived moments later and found the shooting suspect.

The officer confronted the man and the shooting suspect pulled out his gun, McManus said.

The officer then withdrew and asked for backing while shadowing the shooting suspect, who was still walking up the street with the gun visible, on Burleson.

When the second group of officers arrived 15 to 20 minutes later, five of the officers overshadowed the shooting suspect and tried to reduce the situation, McManus said.

McManus said the suspect told a captain at the scene, “I’m not putting down my gun.”

The shooting suspect walked into an empty field, and officers used a Taser to try to subdue him, according to the chief. He then shot at the officers, and five of them fired back and hit him several times, McManus said.

None of the officers were injured in the shooting.

The shooting suspect was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim, who was shot at the apartment complex, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The principal said he was stable with the latest investigation.

The officers, whose careers at the SAPS vary between three and 19 years, will be placed on administrative service.

McManus said the information provided during his briefing is preliminary and may be subject to further investigation.
