Heavy flames and smoke can be seen Sunday from Saratoga Street in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where several fire departments are responding to a major fire involving at least five buildings.

NBC10 Boston meteorologist Chris Gloninger said the northwest wind was blowing at 26 mph, leading to exposure issues.

NBC10 Boston has crew on the scene. According to them, serious damage is visible to at least one house, but thick smoke limits the view in the area.

A part of one of the roofs of the house falls in and you can see big flames shooting out on top of the building. Our crew members say with a section of the roof there is smoke everywhere.

The Massachusetts Red Cross is responding to this, saying there are an unknown number of adults and children believed to be displaced.

Victims of the fire are being asked to meet with the Red Cross for assistance at the command center in Lawrence Street near Pollo Tipico (190 Lawrence Street) and Farrah Funeral Home (in 133 Lawrence Street), according to the mayor’s office.

The agency provides comfort, financial assistance and long-term recovery services.

Residents of Lawrence are being asked not to go near Saratoga Street. Streets in the area were closed, police said.
