The sentence Wednesday was part of a plea deal, Winslow’s attorney, Marc Carlos, told CNN in a statement.
“Mr Winslow was able to avoid the possibility of life imprisonment if he was found guilty of raping several victims during the trial. The plea also spared the victims the trauma of testifying in another trial. He must be a sex offender register when he is released … Winslow’s family remains supportive of him, “Carlos said.
But a jury was set on eight other charges, which led the judge to declare a wrong trial on the charges, including kidnapping, two counts of violent rape, violent oral copulation, sodomy using force, rape of a unconscious person, elder abuse and battery against an elder.
According to a video of the proceedings in the courtroom, he was acquitted of a second charge of conduct.
Until the plea agreement, Winslow is again tried on the eight charges that span 16 years and stem from five defendants. If convicted on all charges and convicted, Winslow could have been sentenced to life in prison.
Winslow was the sixth pick in the NFL draft in 2004. He spent four years with the Cleveland Browns before playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots and New York Jets. He played his last season in 2013.
He is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, who played from 1979 to 1987.
