Katharine McPhee celebrates her two-year wedding anniversary with husband David Foster in June, but before the couple untied the knot, the actress had doubts.
The biggest hurdle for McPhee, 36, said she had to overcome the age difference with the Grammy winner, 71, but there are 35 years between them.
The singer admitted that she was nervous about what people would say.
“We all have the ability to label things and to look at something that seems visible and to be able to express a judgment,” said Monday’s episode of Dr. Berlin’s Podcast on Informed Pregnancy said. “So I get the judgment initially, but things are never as they seem, things are never exactly as they seem and I fall in love with our love story and that’s all that matters.”

The couple recently welcomed their first child, a boy. Foster has five other adult daughters from previous marriages.

“We had a real trip and I had a real process,” McPhee said of their relationship, which began as a friendship.
The couple first met in 2006 when McPhee participated in the fifth season of ‘American Idol’ and Foster was a mentor in the singing competition series.

“The Waitress” star explained their age gap, “It took me a while to come to really want a real, serious relationship because I was very worried about what people would think.”
“The perception of what people are trying to create, especially among women, is always the woman’s fault,” she added.

“This is the woman who wants to be with the older man because he has money and he’s had success and she wants it, that,” McPhee reflects. “I mean, our story was the opposite.”

McPhee earlier told the show “TODAY” that she ‘always just admired [David] and loved him and he has always been so wonderful to people around him. He can be intimidating when he really has to be for his job, but he’s really sweet. ‘

When asked what he likes about McPhee, Foster replied: ‘Her singing, first. I mean where do I start the inner beauty, the outer beauty, and we have been friends for 14 years, and it was just a natural get together. ‘
