Incredible photos show the dramatic eruption of Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe

Mount Etna in Sicily, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, spewed smoke, ash and lava earlier this week.

Although the blast looked dramatic, Italian authorities said it posed no danger to any of the surrounding towns, and residents did not appear to be concerned.

Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe at almost 3,324 meters. It is located on the east coast of Sicily, Italy.

At night the clouds disappeared, but glowing lava still flowed from the crater.

Hot lava was still firing from the crater of the volcano.

Although photos of the event looked dramatic, Italian officials told local media: “We saw worse.”

Officials also said the eruption posed no danger to surrounding villages. However, they still closed Catania’s international airport as a precaution.

Most Sicilians said they were not worried and that they were used to the volcano erupting.

Daniele Palumbo, who is originally from Sicily but now lives in London, said it was ‘always very funny’ to see outsiders react when Etna erupted.

“I think we will be more concerned if all these events do not happen,” Palumbo was quoted as saying by the Independent.
