Illinois will soon launch two new mass vaccination sites, including one in Des Plaines, officials announced Wednesday.
The state-sponsored sites will begin Thursday in Des Plaines and Quincy, bringing the total number of mass vaccination sites in Illinois to 18. The Des Plaines site, located in a former K-Mart at 1155 E. Oakton St., is the fourth largest in Cook County alone and will, according to provincial officials, be the first large-scale facility to house the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in Illinois. administered.
“The COVID-19 vaccine in Des Plaines is our last step forward in vaccinating Cook County and our most vulnerable communities,” Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle said in a statement. “This new site, which is favorably located for many residents of the northern suburbs, will be used over the coming months as we progress with our program and the increase in vaccine supply.”
According to Cook County, the Des Plaines office will open appointments Thursday afternoon and vaccinate residents Friday or Saturday, pending the arrival of the vaccine doses. Click here for more information on appointments and availability.
The launch comes on the same day for eligible residents for the upcoming United Center location, with plans to begin vaccinations next week.
Both the Des Plaines and Quincy sites offer nearly 4,000 doses a day together when at full capacity, officials said.
‘With our new operations in Des Plaines and Quincy, Illinois now operates 18 state-sponsored mass vaccination sites, in addition to the network of more than 800 vaccination sites across the state, all trained on one goal: to vaccinate as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, “Governor JB Pritzker said in a statement. ‘One in six Illinois residents has already received their first dose of vaccine, and as the federal government raises Illinois’ delivery to more than 100,000 a day later this month, IDPH and our 97 local health departments are ready to meet. Meanwhile, I encourage all Illinois residents to wear their masks and be vigilant as we penetrate to the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. ”
Pritzker also announced plans to activate members of the National Guard in the provinces of Union, Johnson, Pope, Hardin, Alexander, Pulaski and Massac.
In addition, Chicago also plans to open ‘new mass vaccination sites’ in the coming months.
According to adv. Aurora Health is investigating a mass vaccination site in Wrigley Field.
Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, also said the department is investigating the presentation of a Soldier Field mass vaccination site.
“We are quite ready to set up massive vaccination rooms, but it’s about vaccination,” she said last month.
Pritzker hinted at the possibility of additional locations in Illinois.
Asked if Chicago’s McCormick Place could be a future site, Pritzker said “the opportunity for us to look at other places is always open.”

The increasing number of mass vaccination sites follows the entry of Illinois into Phase 1B Plus, which has expanded the admission to vaccinations under Phase 1B to include people with certain high-risk medical conditions and comorbidities.
While the state has expanded its Phase 1B, many counties, health departments, and hospital systems – including Chicago and Cook County – have said they will not join the rest of Illinois to be more eligible, citing the low vaccine supply for those who already qualify.
Previously under the earlier recurrence phase 1B, residents 65 years and older, as well as essential workers, qualify to receive the vaccine.
