How to Export (and Import Elsewhere) LastPass Passwords

LastPass has a free level, and it helped make it one of the most popular password managers. But the free level now gets big restrictions.

As of March 16, LastPass users of the free plan will no longer be able to use the password manager on their phone and laptop. They will have to choose one type of device.

The LastPass free plan now has two options:

  • Desktop only: If you select the desktop option, you can only access your data from any Mac, Windows or Linux computer, which contains computers or laptops.
  • Mobile only: If you select a phone, you can only access your data from an iPhone, iPad or Android phone (such as a Samsung Galaxy phone).

What you can not do is use LastPass for free on your computer and phone. It’s not going to work for many people, which means it’s time to upgrade to a paid plan ($ 36 per year for a single user, $ 48 per year for families) or move your data elsewhere.

There are several other password services that we think are better than LastPass, and one of them is also free. Check out our updated guide to the best password managers if you want to switch. Once you have decided where you want to take your passwords, you need to export your data from LastPass and enter it into the new service.

How to export your LastPass data

LastPass has two output options: a CSV file or an encrypted file. If you switch to one of the services in our directory, CSV is the option to use.

It is important to note that CSV is a plain text file, which means that all your password data in the file we are going to export is unencrypted in plain text. Be very careful with this output file. I suggest you run the output on your desktop or laptop using the browser extension, but only on a network you trust. After entering the data into the new password manager, you will need to delete the plain text file.

The easiest way to get your data out is to expand the LastPass web browser, which you can access from the LastPass Web site. After installing the browser extension, click the download button in the browser to open the LastPass menu. Click on Account options, dan Advanced, dan Export. You should then see an option named “LastPass CSV File”. Click on the link and your web browser will save the resulting file to your hard drive.

If you are using on a phone or tablet (or have already chosen a mobile plan), you must use lastpass.com. Beware. Many browsers do not download the generated file automatically. To use the website, log in to your account and expand the sidebar menu and click on the Advanced options menu item. Then click on the Export option, enter your master password and click if. It will then open a CSV file in your browser. Some browsers will automatically download this file. If yours does not do this, select everything and copy it. Then open Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (MacOS) and paste the CSV data. Choose File> Save As in Notepad or TextEdit and enter a name with the .csv extension at the end. Make sure you save it as plain text (not rich text).
