Hawley tears up Trump indictment as ‘kangaroo trial’

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri, slammed Trump’s accusations in the Senate as a “kangaroo trial” while Democrats continued their case against the former president on Thursday.

“This is completely unconstitutional and it’s incredibly selfish on the part of the Democrats who are pursuing their own political suppliers here,” Hawley said in an interview with Fox News’ Harris Faulkner.

He added: “This is a total kangaroo trial.”

CAN THE SENATE STOP RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AGAIN?

The indictment managers appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday had their last chance to file their case against Trump. The proceedings began at noon and the managers had up to eight hours to complete their case. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post, but Trump’s legal team will defend the former president after they close.

Trump’s legal team argued this week that the accusation of a former president is unconstitutional. Hawley said in the interview: “The Constitution does not allow them to do what they try.”

DETERMINATION TEST: HOW MANY SENATE VOTES DO THEY HAVE TO JUDGE TRUMP?

“You will get nothing but condemnation from me for what happened to the criminals on January 6 at the Capitol, but that does not make the trial more legal than it is, which is completely illegal the Constitution,” Hawley said. .

To get a conviction, Democrats will likely need at least 17 Republican senators to join all 50 Democratic senators to vote for conviction. But that seems unlikely as the majority of IDP senators came out against the constitutional basis of the trial.
