‘For decades, the wages of everyday, working Americans have remained stagnant [sic] “while monopoly corporations have consolidated the industry after the industry, ensuring record profits for CEOs and investment bankers,” Hawley said in a statement.
“Mega-corporations can afford to pay their workers $ 15 an hour, and it’s been a long time coming, but it should not be at the expense of small businesses that are already struggling to make ends meet.”
Progressive Democrats, who are campaigning for a minimum wage of $ 15, were hit on Thursday night when Senate MP Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that the policy could not be included in the budget reconciliation process.
Democrats hoped to pass the wage as part of a $ 1.9 billion COVID-19 aid package using the reconciliation process that only requires a simple majority in the Senate to pass.
Sanders expressed the opinion, saying he would work on an amendment to tax large, lucrative companies that pay less than $ 15 an hour.
“This amendment should be incorporated into this Reconciliation Bill,” he said.
The details of the various plans do not match, especially not elements that would subsidize wages for small businesses.
But this is not the first time Hawley and Sanders have supported similar policy objectives. Last year, the two laws merged to increase COVID-19 stimulus payments from $ 600 to $ 2,000.
