Hawley, who recently came under fire amid allegations that he played a role in the riot in the Capitol earlier this month, made the announcement hours after the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs closed its trial with Mayorkas. The move delays the nomination of a post Democrats have argued is critical to filling immediately to protect national security.
“Mr Mayorkas has not adequately explained how he will enforce federal law and secure the southern border, given President-elect Biden’s promise to withdraw important enforcement and security measures,” Hawley said in a statement.
“Just today he did not want to say that he would apply the laws that Congress has already passed to secure the boundary wall system. As a result, I cannot allow the standard process to be skipped and this nomination to be followed more quickly if so many questions remain unanswered, ‘he added.
Hawley’s opposition comes as Biden and Democrats claim the attacks on the Capitol make the post a top priority. Hawley was the first senator to announce that he would vote against the certification of the 2020 election result.
His hold could stop a nomination that would otherwise be expected to progress once the Democrats gain control of the Senate on Wednesday. To defeat the hold, 60 senators will have to vote, requiring ten Republicans to cross over in favor of promoting Mayorkas’ nomination.
Mayorkas, who previously served as DHS’s deputy secretary under the Obama administration, did not earn any Republican votes when he was confirmed in 2013.
Hawley’s opposition stems from an exchange in which lawmaker asked Mayorkas whether he would oblige $ 1.4 billion in funds set aside for Trump’s boundary wall.
‘If I can strike at the fundamental point that I believe you have inquired into, it is this: If I were to fulfill the law and carry out my responsibilities, I would have the privilege of serving as Home Security Minister.
