Goya Board of Directors Relieves CEO of Election Fraud Comments

Goya’s board of directors has reportedly voted to disregard CEO Robert Unanue after making unfounded allegations about voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.

On Inauguration Day on Wednesday, Unanue appeared on Fox Business, saying that President Joe Biden’s victory was “not verified” and that he was talking about an impending war.

“I think it’s a mission achieved by the trade union, the partnership, the conglomerate of social media, big technology, big media and the big government to usher in the dawn of a new world order,” Unanue said on the air said. ‘There’s an upcoming war, now that the president is leaving today, they’re still coming behind the United States, the working class. ‘

The council’s decision, taken Friday and first reported by the New York Post, means Unanue can no longer speak to the media without first obtaining board approval.

Unanue confirmed to the Post that he would no longer speak publicly about politics or religion, but did not directly mention the board’s decision.

“Independently, I decided to lower the temperature and talk away from politics and religion,” Unanue told the Post. “I realize this is important because of the differing views of the company and our market.”

Unanue made headlines in July when he praised President Donald Trump at a White House event at the time, saying the country was “truly blessed” to be led. These comments led to a backlash from a number of Spanish politicians and led to a call on social media for a boycott of the Latino food business.

Trump supporters then responded by launching a ‘buy-cott’ and Ivanka Trump backed the company, urging consumers to buy Goya products.

Goya does not disclose financial earnings, so it is unclear what impact Unanue’s comments had on the company. But a source who spoke to CNN Business said the comments endangered the company’s future and that sales growth was less than it was before its comments.
