Fred abused online on a race after Manchester United’s defeat by Leicester | Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Fred has been subjected to racist abuse following his side’s 3-1 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester on Sunday.

Fred was guilty of Leicester’s opening goal when he donated the ball to Kelechi Iheanacho in front of goal, and Leicester’s striker rounded goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

After the match, the 28-year-old’s Instagram account became the target of abuse online, with several of the comments racial in nature.

The Brazilian international is one of several United players who have been subjected to abuse in recent weeks. Marcus Rashford posted a statement at the end of January on comments, while also targeting Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe, as well as Lauren James of the women’s team.

Manchester United had earlier condemned abuse directed at their players by “senseless idiots”.

“Manchester United is intolerant of any form of racism or discrimination and has made a long-standing commitment to combat it through our All Red All Equal initiative,” the statement said.
