Four skiers die, four others survive an avalanche in Millcreek Canyon on Saturday

Four skiers were killed in an avalanche in Mill Creek Canyon on Saturday.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said on Twitter there were four deaths in the Mill Creek Canyon area on Saturday afternoon. She said rescue teams are on the premises.

According to Drew Hardesty with the Utah Avalanche Center, the avalanche happened near Wilson Peak, on the ridge separating Big Cottonwood Canyon and Mill Creek Canyon. He said it happened on steep, north-facing terrain.

Four, according to the Utah Avalanche Center, is the highest number of deaths in an avalanche in the Wasatch Mountains since 1914. That would also match the state record. Four people died in a 1992 avalanche in Gold Basin near Moab.

Three were killed in an avalanche that washed up 15 people in Provo Canyon near Sundance Resort in 2003.

Government Spencer Cox tweeted that the deaths are a terrible tragedy. He said people should be extremely careful due to the current avalanche conditions.

Hardesty said the victims are experienced skiers known in the community. He also calls their death a terrible tragedy.
